Hotels in Kerch, showing 3
Kerch is one of the oldest cities in the world. Kerch is located in the east of the peninsula of the same name - the eastern tip of the Crimea. There are five mountain ranges on the Kerch Peninsula. One of them, the central one, forms an elevation around which the modern city is built. This is Mount Mithridates, named after the legendary ruler of the Bosporus state, Mithridates VI Eupator. The Kerch Peninsula is not at all like the Crimea familiar to holidaymakers, it is so different that it seems that this is not Crimea at all. Everywhere you look, there is a plain with low hills or a flat sandy desert or the sea; no mountains, no tall buildings to hold back the wind. Therefore, out of 365 days a year, 360 are windy here, and it can blow from any side. The local salt lakes dry up from the summer heat, overgrown with crusts of salt and mud. From time to time, a stormy wind erodes the sand bar, and these lakes are filled with sea water. Interesting places and main attractions of the city and its surroundings: Yeni-Kale Fortress - right on the bank of the strait stands a Turkish fortress that has survived to this day. It is better to visit the fortress starting from the lower part, which is located by the road. This part of the fortress was restored not so long ago, in some places you can see areas of modern masonry and cement. Cape Zyuk - not far from Kerch, on the shores of the Sea of Azov, in the village of Kurortnoye, there is a beautiful Cape Zyuk, which is the northernmost point of the peninsula. It separates two bays - the Marine Corps and the Reefs. Adzhimushkai quarries - An attraction that went down in history because of the dramatic events that took place during the Second World War on the territory of the Adzhimushkai quarries. The Great Mithridates Staircase - built in the 19th century, it is named after Mount Mithridates. 436 staircase steps are directed there. After the end of 7 years of construction, the stairs were decorated with vases on observation platforms and mythical griffins made of stone. Kerch Fortress - the Kerch fortress, built in the 19th century, has a second, more ancient name - Fort Toleben. This is a defensive structure, which was erected to block the shipping routes between the Black and Azov Seas, as well as for a defensive function. It is located on Cape Ak-Burun, which is located in the southern side of the city.
